Why LENA?

Project summary

Nature and man have lived side by side millions of years. This coexistence has been different, but the connection of humans with the surrounding natural environment is always important. On the 21st century, when more and more people live in towns, their knowledge about nature has become relatively poor. This knowledge is not sufficient to protect nature from negative influences caused by human activities – very often these activities harm nature! As a result, landscapes change, habitats are destroyed, and the species of animals and plants become extinct. Many of them are already gone, while many others are threatened today. It is possible to preserve those species, save them from becoming extinct, if people have relevant knowledge and if they wish to act correspondingly.

Which is the harm to nature caused by people? Is it necessary to do this harm? How is it possible to prevent or lessen this harm? – All these questions require knowledge about nature on certain level.

The aim of project LENA is to bring humans in touch with nature again, to teach people about the values of nature existing around us.

Raising the level of knowledge in people about nature can be done step by step. It can be done if people are provided with an opportunity to get in touch with values of nature. During this process experts of nature, experts of adult teaching and others should be involved.

By recalling and learning natural values people will have a bigger chance to notice nature, and also to value nature.

By understanding the processes of nature, humans can better understand their place in the world; they can also better avoid dangers coming from nature.

A person who is aware of nature, and of the processes going on in nature, is able to notice the values of nature around him, he is also able to pass this knowledge to others. This person can consciously consider nature during his economic, communicational and other activities.

During the process of learning nature, in which adult people with different life experiences exchange their knowledge and skills about nature and human activities carried out in nature, everyone involved will be more educated at the end of project LENA. Thus, after the project the participants will have more chances to improve their lives, e.g. by participating more actively in social life, including nature-related activities; by increasing their chances to find jobs in the fields of environmental education, nature-related tourism, nature conservation, area planning, building industry, community leadership etc.

By acting together in the topic of learning nature, we, people, can preserve natural values around us, we do not destroy them. By acting in a nature-friendly way, by considering with nature in our doings we can shape the behaviour of mankind, making it more nature-friendly, more considering with other creatures living on planet Earth. All this is reflected in the main goal of project LENA towards which we move together, during this movement constantly learning and developing.
